I pretty much didn't have anything to harvest this last month besides the occasional tomatoe, bean, or lettuce. It all kinda looked the same so I decided not to keep posting about it. Finally got a few new tomatoes for my Honey Delight Tomato plants. I had never tried this variety but I like them a lot already. Deep yellow color and a sweetish taste with just a tiny hint of lemon. Like most cherry tomatoes the skin is a little thicker but I really don't mind. Oh, all my squash plants are dead. It was pretty much an overnight thing. I think it was the same pest that killed off most of my lettuce. Pepper took a big hit too. I almost pulled them up but decided to wait a bit and now they are starting to come back with some new bottom growth. Things I can for sure grow in Hawaii are a bit limited: tomatoes, beans, lettuce, and most herbs seem to be doing fairly well. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-IFwOO-JSxkM/U5Udz3iI6ZI/AAAAAAAABMg/K8gteDaWrWs/s2048/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-IFwOO-JSxkM/U5Udz3iI6ZI/AAAAAAAABMg/K8gteDaWrWs/s500/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" id="blogsy-1402283491127.1477" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="667" alt=""></a></div><p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ucbJjpCVQes/U5Ud2W7P5VI/AAAAAAAABMo/K7fK7700tro/s2048/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" target="_blank" style=" "><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ucbJjpCVQes/U5Ud2W7P5VI/AAAAAAAABMo/K7fK7700tro/s500/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" id="blogsy-1402283491195.991" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Honey Delight Tomatoes</td></tr></tbody></table><p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gg_NTYkmKlE/U5Ud4kBYRDI/AAAAAAAABMw/L5yARTm8Kvo/s2048/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" target="_blank" style=" "><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-gg_NTYkmKlE/U5Ud4kBYRDI/AAAAAAAABMw/L5yARTm8Kvo/s500/Photo%25252020140608163655.jpg" id="blogsy-1402283491196.8755" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Complete corn failure</td></tr></tbody></table><p> </p><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nRDcOrZsV2U/U5Ud7Gr1EBI/AAAAAAAABM4/cBIWkn31H9s/s2048/Photo%25252020140608163656.jpg" target="_blank" style=" "><img src="https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-nRDcOrZsV2U/U5Ud7Gr1EBI/AAAAAAAABM4/cBIWkn31H9s/s500/Photo%25252020140608163656.jpg" id="blogsy-1402283491143.5476" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">First sunflower!</td></tr></tbody></table><p> The garden is kind of in a weird place right now. I have buckwheat growing as a cover crop on two thirds of the raised bed and the other third is ready to be turned and have compost and chicken manure added; then a round of buckwheat. I'm still deciding what to plant after that. I'm half tempted to plant a ton of marigolds and once they get big turn them under as well. I think it would help with the nematode problem we created. Hmmm, I need to think some more. </p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>Living lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378086978812465159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42022007679873623.post-7544005519952505952014-06-08T19:20:00.001-07:002014-06-08T19:21:45.637-07:00Banana & Honeydew Smoothie<div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;">So this is the first smoothie I've made since we got our new mixer. Made lots of other stuff, just no smoothies. I don't have any idea why I took so long. It was so good and easy. I do have a confession to make. I have always disliked pictures where it seems the food or beverage has been spilled over the side or is running down the glass on purpose. I don't really like the messy look. So I'm sure you are wondering why the heck my smoothie looks like that. Truthfully, I was so excited using my mini spatula that I didn't pay enough attention to the cup. Next thing I know it looks like that. Wasteful! This smoothie was exactly what I wanted, super mellow flavor. I want to say it is like vanilla ice cream. Not because it taste like vanilla ice cream, but because it is so plain and subtle. Some time you just want vanilla. </div><table align="center" cellpadding="0" cellspacing="0" class="tr-caption-container" style="margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto; text-align: center;"><tbody><tr><td style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-CzR7erYooYE/U5UZ3CVDr5I/AAAAAAAABMA/3qmj1EJaOKc/s2048/Photo%25252020140608162006.jpg" target="_blank" style=" "><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-CzR7erYooYE/U5UZ3CVDr5I/AAAAAAAABMA/3qmj1EJaOKc/s500/Photo%25252020140608162006.jpg" id="blogsy-1402280471552.4026" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></td></tr><tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Banana & Honeydew Smoothie</td></tr></tbody></table><p style="text-align: center;"> </p><p> <span style="text-align: center; -webkit-text-size-adjust: auto; background-color: rgba(255, 255, 255, 0);"><u>Banana & Honeydew Smoothie Recipe:</u></span></p><p style="text-align: left;">1 cup Milk</p><p style="text-align: left;">1 Ripe Frozen Banana</p><p style="text-align: left;">1 cup Frozen Honeydew (more or less depending on the texture you want)</p><p style="text-align: left;">Throw it all into the mixer in that order and process until desired consistency. I potted them and they seem to be doing ok so far. </div><div class="separator" style="text-align: left; clear: both;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OBznFUvtxm0/U2BCqGnHz7I/AAAAAAAABKU/D44h0g3fmAA/s2048/Photo%25252020140429142227.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-OBznFUvtxm0/U2BCqGnHz7I/AAAAAAAABKU/D44h0g3fmAA/s500/Photo%25252020140429142227.jpg" id="blogsy-1398818658900.7498" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><p> </p><p>Snipped a couple of cuttings from the yellow pear. Figure this will give me a head start over my seeds. I also took some from my patio princess tomatoes because they don't seem to be doing to well where they are and if these root I'll move them to a more sunny location. Last but no least a few rosemary cuttings in the hope I can root them this time. Last time they just died in the cups of water. </p><p> </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Jz-d4SiYL4M/U2BCs5NMj_I/AAAAAAAABKc/2Kos25F5voo/s2048/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-Jz-d4SiYL4M/U2BCs5NMj_I/AAAAAAAABKc/2Kos25F5voo/s500/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" id="blogsy-1398818658825.6372" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="667"></a><span style="line-height: 1.3em;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">Side view of my yard. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-d1xqz8UN1y4/U2BCuyeh-PI/AAAAAAAABKk/E75nUwuJjPs/s2048/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-d1xqz8UN1y4/U2BCuyeh-PI/AAAAAAAABKk/E75nUwuJjPs/s500/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" id="blogsy-1398818658857.7695" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="375"></a><span style="line-height: 1.3em;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;"><br></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">Starting left is my newly trimmed/repotted rosemary plant. I'm attempting to train it into a spherical topiary. Ha! We'll have to wait and see about this. Small red pot is my miniature rose. The large pot with the green bar going across is my new fig tree. I'm attempting to train it to lay horizontally and then allow all the vertical shoots to grow. It is a Japanese training method that uses little space but gets a decent harvest. Hope to have some figs this year. Figs are my all time favorite fruit. We had a fig tree in SC and I still miss it. Hopefully this will hold me over for a while. The clay pot is actually a blueberry plant. Though it looks dead it is starting to come back to life. I repotted it, treated the leaf rust, and moved it to a sunnier location. We will have to wait and see on this one too. The two twin pots to the right are our new asparagus patches!! We transferred a bunch (maybe a few to many) a couple days ago and they are doing great. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-QAjP89OGh6Y/U2BCxrmrYiI/AAAAAAAABKs/If6_toR0MIU/s2048/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-QAjP89OGh6Y/U2BCxrmrYiI/AAAAAAAABKs/If6_toR0MIU/s500/Photo%25252020140429142228.jpg" id="blogsy-1398818658875.566" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Moon flowers are really taking off. I really love having dough ready to go and just waiting in he fridge. We tried using the Boule Master Recipe but found it to be a bit tough as pizza. So we tried the Olive Oil Dough and it was perfect for pizza (as recommended in the book). We used it towards the end of the recommended fridge life, 12 days, but I'm pretty sure it was a little older. I'm not saying how much older, but it turned out awesome! </p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>Living lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378086978812465159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42022007679873623.post-47148903841510605872014-04-23T17:58:00.001-07:002014-04-26T22:36:35.445-07:00Weekly Harvest & Garden Update<p> So last week was a lot of the same things everyday, but at least I was getting stuff. I think the yellow pear only has a little bit of time left too. I did something bad in the garden and now I'll be paying for it for a while. I didn't rotate my crops, add enough compost, and really didn't fertilize much. Now I have a crazy amount of root knot nematodes. I think that is what ended my cherry tomato plant. When we pulled it up the roots were really strange looking, damn nematodes, damn birds and nematodes... So I will be adding a good bit of compost and chicken manure, growing a cover crop to turn under (buckwheat) and a whole bunch of marigolds. Good thing I went crazy with pots. I have a few plants growing in pots, pretty much wherever I can fit a pot. I've got zucchini, patty pan & yellow squash, tomatoes: honey delight/supersweet 100/purple Cherokee/San Marzano, jalapeño & Tabasco peppers. I also started some scarlet runner beans, asparagus, and sweet pea. That is just the stuff I started outside. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-DpHXO2MDnC8/U1hhkCfnThI/AAAAAAAABIQ/xfEbxw3UL0U/s2048/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-DpHXO2MDnC8/U1hhkCfnThI/AAAAAAAABIQ/xfEbxw3UL0U/s500/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" id="blogsy-1398576949047.8328" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="667" alt=""></a><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Back to front: honey delight tomato, yellow squash, supersweet 100, purple tomatillo</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ihJzaestnuE/U1hhoWq-QjI/AAAAAAAABIY/EM7p14FcDUU/s2048/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-ihJzaestnuE/U1hhoWq-QjI/AAAAAAAABIY/EM7p14FcDUU/s500/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" id="blogsy-1398576949010.799" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Asparagus baby!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qvtrVo1Bnxw/U1hhrVmbEkI/AAAAAAAABIg/3XZCHLSQX44/s2048/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-qvtrVo1Bnxw/U1hhrVmbEkI/AAAAAAAABIg/3XZCHLSQX44/s500/Photo%25252020140423145704.jpg" id="blogsy-1398576948978.2395" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Prettiest flower I've grown from seed so far. I'm pretty sure I have a new addiction. One whole flat is dedicated to growing two types of (Queen Sophia & Lemondrop) marigolds. Another is <em>mostly </em>lettuce with couple of empty spots. The other one is a mix of flowers (zinnias, morning glory, marigolds, nasturtium), peppers (tequila sunrise, poinsettia, jalapeño red, sweet banana, cayenne), basil (cinnamon, red Ruben), chives (common and garlic), fennel, papaya, and a couple of lemon seed that I doubt will germinate. Good thing I'm giving away as many as I can. I like to grow from seed verses buying from a nursery because it is a heck of a lot cheaper and the selection is so much greater. Seems like I'm lucky to find two different types of basil at a nursery where if I buy seeds there are too many to try, or at least to many to try in a single year. </p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>Living lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378086978812465159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42022007679873623.post-22338252190618738182014-04-12T11:01:00.001-07:002014-04-12T12:09:43.054-07:00Harvest<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zSzaZBxmpzc/U0mPcofU-pI/AAAAAAAABHg/1DRZszWsH-s/s2048/Photo%25252020140412090930.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-zSzaZBxmpzc/U0mPcofU-pI/AAAAAAAABHg/1DRZszWsH-s/s500/Photo%25252020140412090930.jpg" id="blogsy-1397329782657.5308" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></div><div class="separator" style="text-align: center; clear: both;">So today's (above) haul is a little light compared to yesterday's. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1mcu4Ev4dMQ/U0l_cl44vRI/AAAAAAAABHI/npbf4OCi9J4/s2048/Photo%25252020140412080113.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-1mcu4Ev4dMQ/U0l_cl44vRI/AAAAAAAABHI/npbf4OCi9J4/s500/Photo%25252020140412080113.jpg" id="blogsy-1397329782585.9312" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><p> Yesterday's haul from the garden. I still have no idea on most of the lettuce, but at least most of it tastes good. So I planted a couple of long beans last summer-ish (?) and they seemed so foreign that we chickened out on eating them and just kind of let them go. They got huge, like three feet long and with huge beans, super scary. Ended up just pulling them; figured that was that and moved on. Well, the beans had other ideas, they are determined little guys and just kept coming up. Normally I just pull them when I notice them but these guys snuck in with a few other beans that I planted so I didn't notice them until they started putting out flowers. They have some of the prettiest flowers I've seen in my garden so far. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GeangEyNkew/U0l_fJH6KLI/AAAAAAAABHQ/n-af0pdrzkM/s2048/Photo%25252020140412080113.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-GeangEyNkew/U0l_fJH6KLI/AAAAAAAABHQ/n-af0pdrzkM/s500/Photo%25252020140412080113.jpg" id="blogsy-1397329782629.7073" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a><br></div><p><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">Didn't have the heart to pull them so I figured we would give them one more try. We will see. This morning I harvested some yellow pear and cherry tomatoes, one mystery tomatoe (turns out they are not German Green), and a couple of awesome surprise strawberries. You may be wondering why I didn't let the red tomatoes ripen up all the way and the answer is simple. The damn birds will get to them before I can. They don't mess with the yellow ones so I'm trying out some Honey Delight Tomatoes next. I also harvested some salad greens; two days in a row!</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lNs5JcpSjME/U0XzglzS3OI/AAAAAAAABGY/Z6eIKk9jjvU/s2048/Photo%25252020140409152722.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-lNs5JcpSjME/U0XzglzS3OI/AAAAAAAABGY/Z6eIKk9jjvU/s500/Photo%25252020140409152722.jpg" id="blogsy-1397093270203.0051" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ttZbWCVhcGY/U0Xziv2eRAI/AAAAAAAABGg/-uncvdTAG7E/s2048/Photo%25252020140409152723.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-ttZbWCVhcGY/U0Xziv2eRAI/AAAAAAAABGg/-uncvdTAG7E/s500/Photo%25252020140409152723.jpg" id="blogsy-1397093270187.1277" class="aligncenter" alt="" width="500" height="500"></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-vua5r9PdY9Q/U0XzkzQllJI/AAAAAAAABGo/4NqVNS10Xik/s2048/Photo%25252020140409152723.jpg" target="_blank" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img src="https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-vua5r9PdY9Q/U0XzkzQllJI/AAAAAAAABGo/4NqVNS10Xik/s500/Photo%25252020140409152723.jpg" id="blogsy-1397093270209.0444" class="aligncenter" width="500" height="500" alt=""></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">As you can see in the last picture I didn't check on my tomatoes soon enough and look at what those assholes did! To my credit, my treadmill was down from February 18 - March 11. First repair I've had to make to my machine in 9 years. </li> <li>Logged 149 miles on the bike.</li> <li><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">Read 4 books so far. The first three are a trilogy by Hugh Howey: Wool, Shift, and Dust. The other one is by Forrest Pritchard: Gaining Ground. Really like all four books and highly recommend Gaining Ground to anyone interested in farming or self sufficiency. </span></li> <li><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">Hmmm, should I count this post towards my goal of 24 blog posts?</span></li> <li><span style="line-height: 1.3em;">So I'm thinking abou giving up the violin. Maybe try out the viola or just take a break from music for now. </span></li> <li>Working through my music collection is going well. I listen to music everyday so it isn't hard to make time for it. Already cleaned out a few hundred songs I don't like. </li> <li>Sorting and tagging my photos isn't coming along as fast as the music. But I have done some.</li></ol><p>Overall I'm not quite where I should be, but I am actually doing better than I though I would be. </p><p> </p><div style="text-align: right; font-size: small; clear: both;" id="blogsy_footer"><a href="http://blogsyapp.com" target="_blank"><img src="http://blogsyapp.com/images/blogsy_footer_icon.png" alt="Posted with Blogsy" style="vertical-align: middle; margin-right: 5px;" width="20" height="20" />Posted with Blogsy</a></div>Living lifehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00378086978812465159noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-42022007679873623.post-78940184064963381782014-04-03T12:51:00.001-07:002014-04-03T12:55:36.190-07:00Garden Expansion<p> So to increase our growing space I decided to try some container gardening. The Master Recipe: Boule (Artisan Free-Form Loaf). This is by far the easiest bread recipe I have ever tried. Here is a YouTube vid<a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_c53AYZMGM" target="_self" title=""></a><a href="http://youtu.be/g_c53AYZMGM" target="_blank" title=""></a><a href="http://youtu.be/g_c53AYZMGM" target="_self" title=""></a>eo explaining the whole process. Letting the dough ferment in the fridge is such a great idea. Plus I didn't have my temp quite right and I think it should have baked for a couple of more minutes. Plans were ready and we had all the materials we needed, but we lacked some serious motivation. I must say we were a bit rusty, but in the end we got it completed. Nothing fancy just a bin to put all the scrap wood in. We did add some sturdy casters to it. Rolls great. </p>

<p> So nice with it all out of the way! We even know what we have now. Maybe some other smaller projects will finally be completed. Maybe...</p>

Have I finally found a good sandwich bread recipe... I think I have. The hubby has been wanting to make bread with me for a while. He picked the recipe and I think it's a winner. I always plant my tomatoes too close together so I had to thin them out a bit. We build some quick trellises and added some more dirt/fertilizer. Also finished replacing the wood garden bed with stone, and wow, what a difference that made. The bugs are no joke in Hawaii. The wood we pulled up was as light as paper and folded just as easily. </span></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"> Left to right: three heirloom tomatoes???, two basil plants, three or four cherry tomatoes, and two yellow pear tomatoes. Hope to add some green beans soon. </p>
<p>The stone just looks so much better, I don't know why we didn't do this in the first place. I will be filling the holes in the cinder blocks and planting small flowers to bring the bees back. My tiny yard feels huge now that the tomatoes aren't creeping halfway across the yard. Traded our reel mower for a electric weed eater. First time cutting the grass and it did the job a lot faster and better. This yard is just too small for any mower.</p>

I'm really looking forward to all the great stuff we will be doing. Not sure what all that great stuff will be, but I'll figure it out sooner or later! So this year my goals revolve around all my favorite things.</p>
<ol>
<li><strong>Log 500 miles on my treadmill.</strong> I actually enjoy running on it verses running outside because it has built in air pockets that make it easier on my legs. I also love to watch Netflix while I run. Hope to soon upgrade my wireless earbuds to a quality pair that don't need to be held on with a stretchy headband. </li>
<li><strong>Log 400 miles on my bicycle.</strong> Got a great bike last year but didn't really ride it. I'm super scared of traffic and downhill. Really hope to conquore those with practice. Already logged 8 miles.</li>
<li><strong>Read 12 books. </strong>So anyone who knows me would be shocked that I have to make this a goal, but over that last few years I have fallen off the reading wagon. Already started my first book: The Blood Gospel by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell.</li>
<li><strong>Blog at least 24 times. </strong>I got totally derailed last year and regret it. Blogging is something I really like so I need to make the time to do it.</li>
<li><strong>Continue my musical education.</strong> I rented a violin the beginning of September and took a few lessons to get started. I even went to the violin store today and got a new bow. Turns out I was seriously over rosining the last one. Played for a while when I got home and wow, what a difference it made. Paul was my audience and I didn't do too bad. Thinking about how much better I am now than when I started makes me want to keep practicing to see how much better I could be. Learning to read music has been a unique challenge; feels like a whole new language.</li>
<li><strong>Dejunk my music collection.</strong> I have a bad habit of keeping music in my iTunes account even if I don't like it. I figure someone will like it so I should keep it, right? Wrong. It is time for a good purge.</li>
<li><strong>Digitize, date, tag, and sort all my pictures. </strong>I started this project about a month, month and a half ago and have already made a serious dent. I think I've deleted the majority of the duplicates, but I still have to merge pictures from multiple computers. Decided to scan all my old pictures in so that I can make nice professional looking printed books. I'm also taking the time to tag all the pictures (people, place, activity, etc...). I love photo albums.</li>
</ol>
<p style="text-align: center;"><u>That is a lot of stuff! Lets see what I'm able to accomplish in 2014!</u></p>

<p style="text-align: center;"> Rang in the New Year the best way possible - with my husband, at home, and in our pjs!</p>
<p style="text-align: left;"> </p>
<p style="text-align: center;"><span style="line-height: 1.3em;"><u>So what did I accomplish in 2013</u>:</span><br>
</p>
<ol>
<li>Woodworking - completed two leaning book stands, two sets of night stands, and a garden shed. </li>
<li>Started playing the violin - I have always wanted to learn how and I really love it. I may switch to the viola. We shall see...</li>
<li>Wracked up way too many air miles - a trip Kauai with the family and two trips to South Carolina. My ass wants to stay on the ground for a while. Unless it involves a trip to New Zealand or South America.</li>
<li>Crafts - I completed my very first blanket and two infinity scarfs, all crocheted. </li>
<li>I have managed to truly stay active all year - I can run for 3 miles no problem. I've never felt better and I'm looking pretty dang great if I say so myself!</li>
</ol>

We've made this three times and it is amazing! Quick pickle beets (I swear they don't taste like dirt, even if my hubby says otherwise) and a chicken alfredo with fire roasted tomatoes, fresh grated Parmesan, and parsley from the garden. </p>

I rented a violin and had my first lesson today. It was fun. Just learning all the basics so far and not even using the bow yet. My fingertips are a little sore from practicing. Big surprise, my brain isn't a fan of reading music yet. I rented the violin from a really nice shop for three months. My teacher says it is of high quality, especially for a student. But don't worry I still managed to make it sound pretty crappy :)</p>

<p> I've booked a lesson for every Wednesday this month. Payed in advance too - no backing out now!</p>
